Roman Nose

Our Friday ride at Roman Nose was planned in advance for when our friends Karen & Steve came to visit from the West side of the Cascades.   I joined the procession at the Naples store and we unloaded at the Fall Creek entry.  The trail was in bad need of a grooming, making the ride in almost unbearably slow (for everyone except Travis:). We were greatly rewarded up on top though, with acres and acres of untouched fresh to shred up.  There was probably 10-14" of fresh, slightly less than Gunsight the day before and slightly firmer.  It certainly wasn't bad snow though, and we did our best to track up every square inch of it.  (Our apologies to those who rode "The Nose" Saturday)

The crew consisted of 8 riders:

  • Jon (boondockin)
  • Travis (REM7600)
  • Carl (Powder Seeker)
  • Rory (MMax700)
  • Scott (RMK flit)
  • Karen (socerd6)
  • Steve (Powderhead)
  • myself (Cat_Tamer)
Again not a great picture day, but hey it's winter in North Idaho.

Rory, the new guy, took
the "Wildman of the day award"
with a 20+ foot cornice drop!

We were getting ready to head out when Rory spotted a cornice that seemed to be calling his name.  I rode up to the drop point with him while Travis & Jon helped us pick a line via radio from below.  With a line marked out in the snow and cameras rolling, Rory made the drop.  He made it!  However there was one small problem.  I only got one picture and it wasn't a good one.  I sheepishly asked on the radio if Rory had the kahunas to make the drop a 2nd time for the camera, and indeed he did.  Not once more, but 2 more times!  I got the picture; well sort of.

We decided to let the cornice jump serve as our grand finale and headed back down the bumpy trail.  We each racked up around 50 miles that day  We played hard!  Thanks for a great ride, people.

Here's a few more pictures...
